The rules:
3 points for a win, 2 for a draw, 1 for a loss and 0 for a no-show.
Recording of moves is not required and no clocks are used. If the game is not finished by 19:00 I decide who wins based on a material count. If one side has 3 points or more they win, unless there is an obvious checkmate looming.
Round one pairings are random after that players with similar scores will be paired with each other.
There was a low turnout, but we decided to go ahead anyway. Harry, Dylan and AJ went into the hat with Sarah making up the numbers. Pairings were:-
AJ v Sarah
Dylan v Harry.
Dylan and Harry's game was first to finish. Both boys had developed well and the game looked even, when all of a sudden Harry called check with his knight and much to Dylan's surprise his king was trapped. Checkmate! Smothered checkmate will end a game quickly! Remember king safety.
AJ and Sarah was a longer game where AJ was slowly picking up Sarah's pieces as he developed, made his king safe and then used a bishop and knight to cause havoc on the queen side. This game was not concluded by 19:00 but AJ had a big material lead and was declared the winner.
